Procrastination: WE HAVE TO GET OVER IT!

Just recently, I’ve found myself putting off important tasks over and over again, but I think I’m not alone. In fact, many people procrastinate to some degree – but some are so chronically affected by procrastination that it stops them achieving things they're capable of and disrupts their careers.

Why do we procrastinate?- we procrastinate when we put off things that we should be focusing on right now, usually in favor of doing something that is more enjoyable or that we’re more comfortable doing.

But this is, strictly speaking, impossible. There are an infinite number of things we could be doing. No matter what we work on, we're not working on everything else. So the question is not how to avoid procrastination, but how to procrastinate well. Good procrastination is avoiding errands to do real work.

Of course, the main reason we find it difficult to work on a particular problem is that we don't enjoy it. When we're young, especially, we often find ourselves working on stuff we don't really like-- because it seems impressive, for example, or because we've been assigned to work on it. Most grad students are stuck working on big problems they don't really like, and grad school is thus synonymous with procrastination.

But even when we like what you're working on, it's easier to get ourselves to work on small problems than big ones. Why? Why is it so hard to work on big problems? One reason is that we may not get any reward in the foreseeable future. If we work on something we can finish in a day or two, we can expect to have a nice feeling of accomplishment fairly soon. If the reward is indefinitely far in the future, it seems less real.we always have the feeling of being overwhelmed by the task. You may not know where to begin. Or you may doubt that you have the skills or resources you think you need. So you seek comfort in doing tasks you know you're capable of completing. Another reason we don't work on big tasks is, ironically, fear of wasting time. What if it fails? Then all the time we spent on it will be wasted.

But whatever the reason behind our procrastinations, it must be recognized, dealt with and controlled before we miss opportunities and our career is derailed. So to have a good chance of conquering procrastination, we need to spot straight away that we're doing it. Then, we need to identify why we're procrastinating and take appropriate steps to overcome the block. Part of the solution is to develop good time management, organizational and personal effectiveness habits, such as those described in Make Time for Success! This helps us teens establish the right priorities, and manage our time in such a way that we make the most of the opportunities open to us.

Britney Spears' Ex-Boyfriend, Photographer Jailed!

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A celebrity photographer who briefly dated Britney Spears at the height of her career meltdown was sentenced to 45 days in jail on Friday after clashing with an official trying to serve him a restraining order.

Adnan Ghalib, 37, one of the paparazzi who trailed Spears night and day in 2007, was also ordered to complete an anger management program.

Los Angeles prosecutors alleged that in February Ghalib drove his car toward an official who was trying to serve a court order keeping him away from Spears and her family.

Ghalib pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, and charges of assault were dropped.

Spears, now 27, began a relationship with Ghalib in December 2007 when her private and public life were falling apart following her divorce, stints in rehab and a notorious head shaving incident.

Her behavior improved after the singer's father intervened and was given control of her business and personal affairs by the Los Angeles courts in January 2008.

CNN HERO OF THE YEAR- something for us to be PROUD of!

MANILA, Philippines—Efren Penaflorida, the educator who was named 2009 CNN Hero of the Year for initiating a “pushcart classroom” to indigent children, will be feted to hero’s welcome when he returns to the country.

The 28-year-old Penaflorida will be conferred the Order of Lakandula in Malacanang in ceremonies to be led by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, according to Palace deputy spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo.

The same recognition was given to boxing champion Manny Pacquiao two years ago.

“We would like to congratulate him and we would like him to know that we are very proud of him,” Fajardo said on Monday’s news briefing in Malacanang aired live over government’s Radyo ng Bayan.

She said the Department of Education should draw inspiration from Penaflorida on how it can work with other philanthropists implementing similar programs for the poor.

“The DepEd gets the biggest budget every year. Itong ginagawa niya ay isang magandang ehemplo para sa pribadong sector at sa government (What he does is a good example for the private sector and the government),” she said.

Fajardo said it was good that Penaflorida and other groups complement what the government could not do for the education sector.

Asked if the government was willing to extend financial support to the educator to expand his program, Fajardo said, “Of course. Una, nakita natin iyong effectivity ng ginagawa niya so maaaring tingnan ng DepEd, pero palagay ko yong (First we see the effectivity of what he does, so the DepEd may look at his program, but I think the) $100,000 will really go a long way.”

The government has existing programs which can complement Penaflorida’s kariton classroom, she stressed.

Bayan Muna party-list Representative Satur Ocampo hailed Penaflorida for his advocacy and for the recognition, saying this is a “victory of hope against hopelessness, concern against indifference, and determination against inaction.”

"At a time when so much is going wrong in this country and there is a tragic dearth of role models, PeƱaflorida and his pushcart school have shown that there is hope. This young man is an inspiration to everyone that they can make a difference in the lives of so many others. He has proven that even the most humble of efforts, when done sincerely and with the goal of helping others, can go a long, long way," Ocampo said.

“We hope that many others will take up his concern and similar endeavors to help the poor and the needy so neglected by the government,” he added.
